Field Investigations in Nakuru and Uasin Gishu Counties 4th – 6th February 2025

On the 4th, the team investigated air pollution resulting from dust and smoke emissions from Tywood Company Limited, situated in the Total area of Kamara Ward, Nakuru County.

The team held a Courtesy Call to Mr. Kennedy Baraza, the Chief Officer of Environment, Water, Energy, Natural Resources, and Climate Change followed by a site visit, where the team noted that the company had halted the incineration activities at the time of NECC’s inspection; and interviewed the complainant and area residents.

On the 6th, the team, led by Hon. Godana Doyo, Chairman, and Mr. William Nairuko, Member, paid a courtesy call to the Governor of Uasin Gishu County, H.E. Dr. Jonathan Chelilim Bii, EGH.

The purpose of this engagement was to deliberate on key environmental concerns raised within the county, including:
1. Use of Asbestos Water Pipes – Assessing the continued use of asbestos water pipes in Eldoret City and their potential health and environmental risks.
2. Air and Noise Pollution – Addressing air and noise pollution from Kifaru Garage, which operates within a residential area in Pioneer Estate.
3. Illegal Waste Dumping and Burning – Combating unauthorized waste disposal and open burning near the Kipkaren Estate Mosque, which pose significant environmental and public health risks.

The meeting aimed to strengthen collaboration with the County Government in addressing these critical environmental issues.

On the 5th, a courtesy call was made to the County Commissioner’s office, where the team met Mr. Edwin Lelgo, the Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) of Ainabkoi, who was representing the County Commissioner. This engagement was followed by a consultative meeting with environmental stakeholders in Uasin Gishu County to deliberate on key environmental concerns raised within the County.

The team, accompanied by Area MCA David Leting and the County Enforcement team, conducted a site visit to the Kipkaren dumpsite and Huruma landfill to assess the extent of environmental degradation.

On the 6th, the team visited Kifaru Garage, situated within a residential area in Pioneer Estate, to assess air and noise pollution.

Findings from the visit revealed that the garage operates under a lease agreement within a high-density residential zone and lacks the requisite licenses required for a light industrial facility.
