Field Investigations in Nyandarua and Laikipia Counties

From March 24th to March 29th, 2024, the National Environmental Complaints Committee (NECC) conducted extensive field investigations in Nyandarua and Laikipia Counties. These investigative endeavors were expertly led by our esteemed Committee Members, including Dr. Fancy Too, MBS, serving as Chairperson, Ms. Mary Njogu, our diligent Committee Secretary, Mr. William Otumoi Nairuko, a dedicated Member, alongside Mr. Ernest Mutinda Kioko, HSC, and Mr. Michael Shamku, also esteemed Members of the committee.

Nyandarua County:

The NECC team, led by Dr. Fancy Too, MBS, Ms. Mary Njogu, and Mr. William Otumoi Nairuko, conducted comprehensive field investigations in Nyandarua County to address several critical issues:

  1. Destruction at Umoja Mbuyu Dam: Following the collapse of dam walls due to heavy rainfall, crops in Umoja Mbuyu suffered extensive damage, warranting urgent attention and mitigation measures.
  2. Proposed Honey Refinery: Concerns were raised regarding the proposed construction of a honey refinery within a public cemetery in Ndunyu Njeru, prompting the NECC team to assess the potential environmental impacts and community objections.
  3. Poor Waste Management in Ndaragwa Market: The team observed inadequate waste management practices in Ndaragwa market, highlighting the need for improved waste disposal mechanisms to prevent environmental pollution and health hazards.
  4. Poor Waste Management in Engineer Town: In Engineer Town, the team identified instances of indiscriminate waste dumping.

Laikipia County:

In Laikipia County, the NECC team, led by Committee Members Mr. Michael Shamku and Mr. Ernest Mutinda Kioko, HSC, conducted thorough field investigations to address the following pressing issues:

  1. Pollution of Nanyuki River: The team investigated the pollution of Nanyuki River resulting from the dumping of solid waste and encroachment on the river’s riparian reserve.
  2. Encroachment of Likii River Riparian Reserve: The team assessed the encroachment of the riparian reserve of Likii River, which has led to the establishment of informal settlements.
  3. Livestock Invasion in Conservancies: Livestock invasion into Shulmai, Morpusi, and Mayianat conservancies in Doldol were investigated.
  4. Rampant Charcoal Burning: The team examined the widespread practice of charcoal burning in Doldol.
