Field Investigations in Kwale and Kilifi Counties (3rd – 9th March 2024)

From March 3rd to 9th, 2024, the National Environmental Complaints Committee (NECC) undertook extensive field investigations across the scenic landscapes of Kwale and Kilifi County. The committee, led by esteemed members including Ms. Mary Njogu, Mr. Ernest Mutinda, HSC, and Mr. William Nairuko, addressed various allegations.

In Kwale County:

  1. Destruction of the Kaya-Tiwi Forest: Investigation into the exploitation of the forest for timber and charcoal production.
  2. Noise pollution from a mosque: Examining concerns regarding noise pollution from a mosque along Beach Road.
  3. Poor drainage in Kunda Town: Assessing and seeking solutions for inadequate drainage in Kunda Town.
  4. Improper waste disposal at Mvindeni dumpsite: Investigating improper waste disposal impacting environmental quality.
  5. Illegal sand harvesting at Waa – Ng’ombeni: Addressing environmental degradation and property damage due to unauthorized sand harvesting.
  6. Slaughterhouse in Bongwe: Investigating waste management practices and potential risks of disease outbreaks.
  7. Illegal structures at Kongo River: Examining the proliferation of unauthorized structures causing ocean degradation.

In Kilifi County:

  1. Proposed cement plant in Pingilikani-Chonyi: Addressing concerns about establishing a cement plant in an ecologically sensitive area.
  2. Proposed hotel development in Mayungu: Investigating potential environmental impacts of a hotel development along the coastline.
  3. Proposed asbestos disposal site in Mkondoni: Examining the environmental implications of a proposed asbestos disposal site.
  4. Project commissioning on a riparian area at Sandy Shore Beach Front Resort: Assessing a project’s impact on a riparian area in Mferejini, Kikambala.
  5. Noise pollution from a church in Msumarini Village: Investigating concerns about noise pollution emanating from a church in Kikambala.
