Speaking today during the launch of the Korogocho United Environmental cleanup exercise dubbed “Sustainable and Resilient Environmental Hygiene” in Korogocho Market, National Environmental Complaints Committee Secretary Dr. John Chumo said the Committee receives numerous complaints on encroachment of riparian reserve and waste management which include effluent discharge into the rivers and illegal waste disposal from the residents of Nairobi County.The Committee Secretary requested the Nairobi Metropolitan Services and Nairobi County Government to give special attention to the Physical Planning department to address the issues of encroachment of riparian reserve.The Secretary noted that there is need for NEMA to act on the information given by NECC to ensure the mentioned complaints are resolved for the betterment of a clean environment for all.The Secretary gave a stern warning to those who discharge untreated waste into the rivers be it residential or factories stating that their days are numbered.He also said there is need to keep water clean and reduce the Ksh. 27b of exchequer used yearly to treat water related diseases.In addition, the Secretary gave a hotline 0722510510 to the public to report incidences of environment and rivers pollution.
