On the 18th and 19th of April 2024, NECC undertook significant engagements in Nairobi City County to address pressing environmental concerns.
On the 18th of April, a consultative session was convened at City Hall, Nairobi, with various stakeholders from the Nairobi City County Government. The primary objective was to tackle a range of environmental complaints reported by concerned citizens. These issues included:
- Pollution from the channeling of bio-digester waste in Thome, Nairobi County.
- Noise pollution originating from Habanos Lounge near the Northern Bypass adjacent to Windsor Golf Hotel in Roysambu Sub County, Nairobi County.
- Dumping of construction waste on David Osieli Road, Kileleshwa, Nairobi County.
- Discharge of sewage into stormwater drainage, affecting Getathuru River in Mwimuto Kitisuru, Nairobi County.
- Waste disposal into Kiu River in Kahawa Sukari, Nairobi County.
- Construction activities leading to damage to neighboring premises in South C, Muhoho Avenue, Nairobi City County.
- Pollution from car repair activities at Nyuki Close, Gikomba, Nairobi County.
- Inadequate stormwater drainage, exposed manholes, and stagnant water at Highway Center Ltd along Uhuru Highway stretch, Nairobi City County.
- Encroachment of Getathuru River through apartment construction along Getathuru River/stream, Getathuru Road, Kitisuru, Nairobi County.
- Pollution from slaughterhouse activities at Kiamaiko Ward, Kariobangi, Nairobi County.
The meeting saw the participation of key environmental stakeholders, including Lawrence Mwangi, Assistant Director Environment-Monitoring and Enforcement; Mackline Saitera, Principal PHO; Ruth Waruguru, Director Planning Policy; Grace Maina, Compliance and Enforcement Officer, NEMA; Donald Ochieng, KeNHA; Justus Mwaura, Hydrologist, WRA; Waweru Kindigi and Michael Munyi, both Planning and Compliance Officers; Davis Okoth and Lesley Karwitha, Environmental Officers; and Rachael Wawire, NEMA.
On the 19th of April, NECC convened a meeting with Filex Shilaho, Environmental Officer, representing Roysambu Sub-County. The focus was on addressing two significant environmental concerns within the Sub-County.
After the discussion, the NECC team proceeded to conduct thorough field investigations into these identified issues to gather essential information for effective resolution.
