On March 16, 2024, the NECC team, led by Ms. Mary Njogu representing PS Environment and Climate Change, Eng. Festus Ng’eno, attended the Environment Summit organized by the Hindu Council of Kenya in collaboration with Earth Keepers Foundation.

Ms. Njogu highlighted the following points in her speech:

  • Recognizing the paramount importance of addressing environmental challenges, she was privileged to address this summit dedicated to this noble cause.
  • Various spiritual texts underscore the interconnectedness between humanity and nature, emphasizing the need to bridge this gap.
  • The State Department of Environment and Climate Change is steadfast in its commitment to ensuring a clean, healthy, and safe environment, spearheading Kenya’s climate action, and effectively managing natural resources.
  • Priority areas include ecosystem restoration, with initiatives such as the 15 billion trees in 10 years national tree growing initiative aimed at expanding Kenya’s tree cover.
  • Agro-forestry practices are advocated to plant trees with short to medium-term benefits, thereby contributing to the expansion of carbon sinks and enhancing household economic security.
  • Sustainable waste management is of paramount importance, given the staggering daily waste generation of over 22,000 tonnes in Kenya, underscoring the critical need for proper waste disposal to mitigate environmental degradation and curb disease outbreaks.
  • The implementation of the Sustainable Waste Management Act and associated regulations seeks to repurpose waste into raw materials for a circular economy, guided by the principle of Dharma.
  • Climate action is imperative, given the escalating impact of climate change on Kenya and the global community, necessitating concerted global efforts and robust policies to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and bolster resilience.
  • Gratitude is extended to the Hindu Council of Kenya for organizing this summit and for their collaborative efforts in advancing environmental objectives.
  • Unity in embracing tree growing, sustainable waste management, and climate action as part of our collective duty to safeguard the planet and ensure a sustainable future for Kenya.
