3rd Edition of the Ondiri Wetland Conservation Run 2024

NECC made a significant presence at the 3rd Edition of the Ondiri Wetland Conservation Run 2024. The event, held in Kikuyu, Kiambu County, was graced by the presence of the Environment and Climate Change Principal Secretary, Eng. Festus K. Ng’eno, who presided over the 3km, 5km, and 10km run. This run served as a precursor to the upcoming World Wetlands Day on February 2nd, 2024, to be commemorated in Uasin Gishu County.

During the event, Eng. Ng’eno emphasized the imperative to Gazette the Ondiri Wetland. Notably, Ondiri already possesses an existing integrated management plan, paving the way for its seamless Gazettement within the next 3-4 months.

He said that the gazettement is crucial to ensuring the proper utilization and sustainable management of this critical water source. This measure aims to enhance the sustenance of its ecological and socioeconomic functions for both present and future generations.

As part of raising awareness in anticipation of World Wetlands Day, themed ‘Wetlands For Human Wellbeing’, a total of 8,000 tree seedlings will be planted in the ecosystem.

Distinguished guests in attendance included NEMA Director-General Dr. John Chumo, CEO of Mama Doing Good, and various other dignitaries.
