WEEK 1 OF FIELD INVESTIGATIONS IN NAIROBI CITY COUNTY AND ITS ENVIRONS, 15-19 JANUARY, 2024

During the initial week of Field Investigations in Nairobi County and its surroundings (January 15th-19th, 2024), the NECC team diligently addressed a spectrum of environmental concerns. In Madaraka estate, the team probed into the discharge of waste caused by blockages in an aging sewerage line. Concurrently, the committee initiated thorough investigations, marked by a consultative meeting with environmental stakeholders at the NEMA office in Thika, responding to the concerns articulated by the Kiboko Residents Association. The pivotal issues deliberated encompassed excessive dust and noise pollution, seismic disturbances from quarry explosives, dereliction of land, health ramifications, and structural damage.

An equally pressing concern was the endeavor to rectify waste discharge challenges exacerbated by the purported absence of a proper sewerage system in Mlolongo. This commenced with a meeting with Mr. Amos Punden, the Mlolongo Assistant County Commissioner, followed by an interview with residents from the Mlolongo Plot Owners Association, culminating in an on-site visit.

Furthermore, a meeting with Public Health stakeholders in Mavoko Sub County centered around a complaint lodged by Alpharama Limited regarding the open-air repackaging of cement. The highlighted issues encompassed air pollution, soil degradation, and compromised environmental aesthetics.
