Today marked the 4th day of tree planting initiative in Nandi County which was held at Cherondo location in Tinderet Sub-county.
The tree planting exercise was led by NECC Secretary Dr. John Chumo accompanied by Ms. Isabella Masinde – NECC member, Tinderet Sub-county DCC Ms. Esther Oyugi, ACC Mr. Paul Keriako, Tinderet Sub-county Administrator Mr. Sumu, Forester Tinderet Block (Serengon and Kapchorua), Mr. E. Kilimo, Equity Bank representatives, area Chief amongst others.
Over 2000 tree seedlings were planted to restore Kapchorua forest. The Committee Secretary urged the community to take advantage of the availability of rain water to plant more trees.
The Secretary said though the county is among the leading with the highest tree cover in the country, there is need to plant more trees to boost the current cover of 37% to 50%.
NECC member Ms. Isabella Masinde who also spoke during the exercise encouraged the area residents to grow more trees as part of the UN’s project dubbed “Ecosystem restoration decade” that aims to prevent, halt and reverse the degradation of ecosystems .
In the event, NECC donated 10 beehives to Cherondo Beekeepers and Tree Nurseries Users Group Association to enhance farming and raise the standard of living in the area.
